Is he playing me? Or could this really be something?

There's this guy who's been asking me out since january and telling me how much he loves my personality and thinks we could make a great couple. However, he dated my best friend and so I've been trying to let this crush go. We ended up alone together once and we almost kissed but I told him we couldn't because I felt like it would be weird to date a friend's ex. But, it's like neither of us can let it go. There's all of this sexual tension whenever I see him now and for months he's been wishing I'd reconsider. So the other night, I went over to his house and we watched a movie and ended up making out. I really like him, but he's a jock (not my type) and he dated my best friend. We were both really into it after so much repression of feelings and we did a little more than I expected myself to want to. He kept telling me how much he liked to kiss me and how much he liked to hold me in his arms and that I had beautiful eyes (which is the thing he always says about me, we have nice eye contact) and I know he was sincere because he's not a good lyer, but I'm still afraid he wants me for the wrong reasons. Is that stuff that a player might sincerely say to a girl he was hooking up with? Or do you think he could be something real?
